We have yet to understand many of the reasons why people with diabetes develop diabetic complications. Evidence suggests that vitamin D has an impact on diabetes complications of kidney, bone and cardiovascular diseases, but how and why?
The goal of the study
To investigate the blood levels of vitamin D in patients with diabetes and look at the context of complications with special focus on bone, vascular and kidney disease
To investigate this we are collecting blood and urine samples from all patients at Steno Diabetes Center.
Design and method
Cross-sectional study with prospective observational follow-up of all patients assigned to the outpatient clinic at Steno Diabetes Center after 1 January 2012.
Target group
All patients assigned to the outpatient clinic at Steno Diabetes Center after 1 January 2012.
Expected ending and outcome
The project will provide new knowledge about the causes of development and progression of complications of diabetes, as well as show new ways in relation to preventing and treating complications most effectively in individual patients.
The project is expected to contribute to increased knowledge and potential health benefits for diabetes patients in the long term.
