    Cathepsins in type 1 diabetes

    ​​The gene encoding the lysosomal cysteine protease cathepsin H (CTSH) is a type 1 diabetes (T1D) candidate gene located at the susceptibility locus on chromosome 15q25.1. The project aims at understanding the roles of CTSH and other cathepsins for beta cell function and T1D risk.

    ​Cities Changing Diabetes (CCD) is an international programme addressing the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes in urban settings in major cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Houston, Johannesburg, Mexico City, Rome, Shanghai, Tianjin, Vancouver and Xiamen.

    COVID-19 and Diabetes

    ​The “COVID-19 & Diabetes” project brings together qualitative and quantitative research disciplines in an effort to explore the psychosocial health of people with diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, the project has produced several scientific articles with more to come and contributed to increased awareness on a national and international level about the thoughts, behavior changes and worries experienced by people with diabetes.

    Development of a core outcome set for diabetes after pregnancy prevention interventions (COS-DAP)

    We develop a core outcome set (COS) for behaviour change interventions to prevent diabetes after pregnancies (DAP) affected by gestational diabetes. The COS is expected to enhance opportunities for comparison of future studies.

    Diabetes and disordered eating: How can we support and treat people with diabetes and disordered eating?

    ​The project aims to assess the biopsychosocial support and treatment needs in people with diabetes and disordered eating in order to develop and test methods to address the identified needs. The project is funded by the Danish Diabetes Association.

    ​​This project strives to identify factors that affect the working life of people with diabetes as a starting point developing interventions that can improve the experience of being at work and strengthening the employment relationship among people with diabetes.

    ​​This project focuses on family-based obesity interventions for children and adolescents. The aim is to produce knowledge and to develop new methods (for creating family involvement) that involve the whole family in positive and constructive ways and reduce detrimental communication.

    Fenofibrate as an early treatment option in newly onset type 1 diabetes

    In this study, we will investigate the antidiabetic effects of the drug fenofibrate in newly onset T1D. The study is designed as a randomized, double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial with 58 newly diagnosed T1D patients.

    Food literacy among Danish schoolchildren

    ​This study develops tools for the measurement of food literacy and exploration of influential mechanisms for developing food literacy among sixth and seventh grade schoolchildren. The developed tools are subsequently applied to evaluate Arla Fonden’s “FOODcamp”.

    Formative evaluation of the Danish health promotion program called ‘Fælles om Ungelivet’

    Fælles om Ungelivet’ is a health promotion program that intends to create a good and inspiring adolescence, where alcohol, tobacco and drugs do not play a significant role. The program is currently in a pilot and development phase in five Danish municipalities, and Health Promotion Reseach is responsible for a formative evaluation which will form the basis for the development of a comprehensive model that can be extended to the rest of Denmark’s municipalities.

    ​Healthy vocational schools aim to develop and implement a sustainable health promotion model that promotes health and wellbeing among vocational education students. The overall vision is to prevent lifestyle diseases later in life. Currently, we are developing and testing the feasibility of the model at nine vocational schools across two regions in Denmark.

    Metabolomics and autoantibody development in individuals at high risk for type 1 diabetes

    ​​The project seeks to identify risk metabolomic profiles for autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes. By further investigating the relationship of these metabolomic profiles with other established genetic and environmental risk factors for type 1 diabetes, we hope to contribute to the unraveling of this complex immunologic/metabolic disease and highlight potential new therapeutic targets.

    MODY-clamp

    ​Currently sulphonylureas are the drug of choice when treating patients with HNF1A-diabetes (also known as MODY3). However, no study have investigated combination treatment. This study will provide insight into if combination of incretin based treatment and sulphonylurea may be a good treatment option in patients with HNF1A-diabetes. This study is a glucose-clamp study, where patients will receive combinations of GLP-1, GIP and glimepiride. The effects on insulin and glucagon will be investigated.

    ​What is the benefit of education outside the classroom (EOtC) for pupils’ movement behaviour, academic motivation, and well-being? The cluster RCT study MOVEOUT investigates the effects of regular practiced EOtC on pupils’ health and learning. The results will impact an expected future scale-up of EOtC.

    Nature Families

    ​The intervention Nature Families is developed and implemented by The Danish Society for Nature Conservation and evaluated by Health Promotion Research at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen. The intervention is based on a family to family approach and targets children and their families. The aim of the intervention is to promote mental and social health as well as nature connection through increased social exposure to nature.

    New approaches to health promotion in deprived neighbourhoods

    ​​This project investigates the development and implementation of health promotion activities in deprived neighbourhoods. In these areas, the residents are at increased risk of developing diabetes and other Non-Communicable Diseases (NSD’s) as inappropriate health behaviour is concentrated among socially disadvantaged groups.

    Online peer support in daily life with type 1 diabetes

    ​Online peer communities for persons with type 1 diabetes are increasing in Denmark as well as worldwide, and open up a virtual space through which exchange of experience, social support and connections among peers are made possible. This is especially the case with the social media platform Facebook, which is used by 73% of the Danish population.
