Research area
My research focuses on the development, testing,
evaluation, and implementation of dietary interventions targeting individuals with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. I primarily work with pragmatically designed randomised controlled trials (RCTs), often combined with a mixed methods approach to gain a comprehensive understanding of both clinical outcomes and participant experiences. The qualitative components are applied both in the initial phase for needs assessment and intervention design, and in the evaluation phase, where they provide insight into participants' experiences, perceived relevance, usability, and the intervention's potential for implementation in practice.
The overarching research aim is to develop, test, and implement effective dietary interventions and digital tools that support sustainable behaviour change, promote self-management, and demonstrate clinical impact in people with diabetes with the goal of strengthening individualised, evidence-based dietary care and contributing to more sustainable and person-centered diabetes management.

- INTENSE-GDM
Effect of intensive nutrition training, education, and support versus standard care in reducing the need for insulin therapy in gestational diabetes (INTENSE-GDM): A randomised controlled trial
User involvement (needs assessment), RCT, and post-intervention qualitative interviews.
Aim: To investigate whether extended dietetic counselling and support can reduce the need for insulin therapy in women with GDM without increasing healthcare costs.

- PRECISE-DIET
Precision nutrition versus standard dietary care: Effect of personalised dietary care based on continuous glucose monitoring in type 2 diabetes (PRECISE-DIET trial).
3-month feasibility study and 1-year RCT testing continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)-based carbohydrate recommendations tailored to postprandial glucose responses.
Aim: To evaluate the effect of intermittent use of CGM for more personalised dietary counselling on changes in HbA1c compared to standard dietary care after 6 months of intervention and 6 months of follow-up.

Optimal Non-pharmacological Lifestyle Modifications in people with Type 2 diabetes
User involvement in design development, 1-year feasibility study, and 2-year RCT.
Aim: To compare the effects of different lifestyle interventions with either low (25–30 E%) or higher (45–50 E%) carbohydrate intake, with or without high-intensity exercise against standard care on diabetes remission after 2 years in individuals with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

Time-restricted eating in the treatment of type 2 diabetes
User involvement in design development, 3-month feasibility study, and 1-year RCT.
Aim: To evaluate the effect of time-restricted eating on metabolic control in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
- STENO FOOD CONCEPT
Development and evaluation of a digital tool (app) to reduce sodium intake in individuals with diabetic kidney disease.
6-month non-randomized intervention study with a control group. The intervention group consists of patients from SDCC using an app-based dietary intervention, and the control group is recruited from Nordsjællands Hospital. Participants have type 2 diabetes and moderate kidney impairment (eGFR 30–59 ml/min/1.73 m²).
