Type 1 diabetes and the remission phase in children and adolescents.
Current Research
My goal is to contribute to a more individualized understanding and treatment of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents. My research focuses on type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents, with particular emphasis on disease progression during the first year after diagnosis. I work with both observational and interventional study designs to characterize heterogeneity among newly diagnosed patients, including variations in beta-cell function and metabolic control. A central component of my work is the stratification of patients based on clinical and biochemical markers to identify subgroups with differing disease trajectories and treatment responses, including responses to immunomodulatory and antiviral therapies.
Markers of particular interest include C-peptide, miRNA, Cathepsin S, the proinsulin-to-C-peptide ratio, and immunological cell profiles.
I am an investigator in two clinical trials investigating immunomodulatory treatment in children (FABULINUS and INVITED) and actively seek to contribute to the discussion of these emerging treatment approaches among healthcare professionals and the general public.
In addition to the ongoing studies, my work draws on data from the INNODIA, DiViDInt, and MELD-ATG cohorts.
