My research is centred around deciphering the mechanisms underlying the pathobiology of pancreatic islets in type 1 diabetes. Additionally, I aim to bridge a knowledge gap surrounding human islets and models of human islet cells to enhance the relevance and applicability of hitherto and future scientific findings in a clinical setting. The ultimate goal is to identify treatments that preserve and/or rescue islet cell function in type 1 diabetes.

Current research

1. Alpha cell impairment in type 1 diabetes
Aim: Establish a translational model of alpha cell impairment in type 1 diabetes in order to investigate means and methods to boost the counterregulatory glucagon response to low glucose and to prevent hypoglycaemia in type 1 diabetes.

2. Deciphering the effects of gut hormones on human islets
Aim: Characterizing the direct effects of GIP, GIP(1-30)NH2, GLP-1 and GLP-2 on human islets under various glucose concentrations to gain a better understanding of gut hormone-islet biology and to explore the potential of gut hormones in type 1 diabetes.

3. Beta-cell pyroptosis in type 1 diabetes
Aim: Investigating the role of pyroptosis in beta-cell death in type 1 diabetes.
