Can stratification of complex cardiometabolic diseases be deployed in clinical practise?
We have previously used hard and soft clustering techniques to stratify type 2 diabetes into clinically meaningful subgroups. We are currently extending these studies by studying effects over time and comparing effects over time and in other patient populations, nationally and internationally.
Can stratification of type 2 diabetes be used to prescribe lifestyle changes?
The evidence offered by precision medicine trials complement the classical randomised clinical trials since they primarily answer the question whether stratification itself is superior to “one size fits all" and are easier to execute because they are power for a predefined clinically relevant difference in effect, i.e. one that would make a compelling case for a recommendation in clinical practise.
As a proof of concept for such trial designs we are designing a precision lifestyle prescription study for type 2 diabetes.
Can stratification of diabetes be combined with data-driven development of quality of care?
With the advent of computational power and novel analytical AI-based tools there is a risk that a one-sided focus on quantitative data bias the medical decision process by not acknowledging the importance of patient capabilities and wishes, along with what can be expected from the health care system or society. We have developed a simple model to be able to recognise these different domains of data, the input of which a successful medical decision process rely on.
