Research ​area

In my research, I focus on appetite, circadian rhythm, exercise, and metabolism in relation to prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. During recent years, we have initiated time-restricted eating studies in the prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Involvement of the end users in the design phase and evaluation of lifestyle interventions in collaboration with qualitative researchers is a central part of my research. Furthermore, in collaboration with Novo Nordisk A/S, we are currently working on a research project in which we investigate homeostatic and hedonic aspects of appetite control in obesity and type 2 diabetes and the role of meal and exercise timing.

Recently, we developed the innovative ’Steno Biometric Food Preference Task’, a novel method to measure food preferences using a computer task and concomitant biometric measurements together with leading experts from public and private institutions. 

We have established an international scientific network within circadian rhythm research in relation to metabolism and cardiometabolic diseases (CIRCLE-DOME). I am also part time Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Copenhagen and Visiting Researcher in the Appetite Control & Energy Balance Research group, University of Leeds, United Kingdom. 

Ongoing projects

  • Hedonic and homeostatic appetite control in obesity and type 2 diabetes and the role of meal and exercise timing – the TIMEX study. Randomized cross-over study.

  • Time-restricted eating in the treatment of type 2 diabetes – the RESET2 study. 3 phases: user involvement, 3-months pilot study and 1-year randomized controlled trial. 

  • Effects of time-restricted eating on body weight, behaviour and metabolism in individuals at high risk of type 2 diabetes – The RESET study. 3-months randomized controlled trial, 3 months follow-up.

  • Exploring time-restricted eating as a strategy to prevent weight gain in South Africans – the TESSA study. 3 phases: user involvement, 2-months pilot study and 1-year randomized controlled trial.
