Jørgen Rungby serves as Chief Physician and Professor at the Steno Diabetes Center and the University of Copenhagen. He currently leads the Translational Type 2 Diabetes Research group. Dr. Rungby graduated as an MD in 1984, specializing in internal medicine and endocrinology. In 1990, he earned his doctorate in neuroscience. He is a former chairman of the Danish Endocrine Society and has served on national and international committees and boards in the field of endocrinology.
He has supervised more than 30 PhD students and authored or co-authored over 270 publications. His recent research has centered on the complications of metabolic diseases affecting the brain, explored through basic biological studies, human-experimental approaches, and epidemiological research. His efforts have significantly contributed to the growing focus on this area, which now features prominently at major international congresses and has garnered substantial industrial interest. This interdisciplinary work involves endocrinology, neuropsychology, imaging, epidemiology, clinical physiology, and neurology. The establishment of the Steno Diabetes Neuro Unit, comprising national and international experts, has been pivotal in advancing these collaborations.
