The StenoPortal Database

The StenoPortal database leverage research data from the Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen for your own research. 

The database offers acces​s to a collection of observational studies and randomized controlled trials designed to investigate cardiometabolic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetic kidney disease in individuals with type 1 or 2 diabetes. 

Data Highlights 

  • Six studies with data from more than 5,500 individuals. 

  • Clinical exams, patient-reported outcomes, lab results. 

  • Diagnostic imaging, omics, and physiological function assessments in many studies. 

  • Blood and urine samples in biobanks available for further research for most studies. 

  • Potential linkage to Danish national health registries for outcome analysis.  

More than 20 additional studies with up to 15 years of follow-up can potentially be added to the database. Please, do contact us if you have interest in specific studies performed at the Steno Diabetes Center which have not yet added to the database. 

Cohorts currently available in the database ​

DANES study 


  • Design: Cross-sectional observational study. 

  • Year of completion: 2022. 

  • Participants: 1.721 adult women and men with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes followed at the outpatient clinic at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, Denmark. 

  • Aim: Explore the prevalence of diabatic neuropathy in patients with type 1 and type 2 DM at SDCC and secondarily to explore associations between diabetic neuropathy and complications. 

  • Data types: Clinical examination including measures of neuropathy e.g. vibration sensation, pain- and temperature sensation, cardiovascular autonomic reflex tests, heart rate variability, electrochemical skin conductance, sural nerve conduction and amplitude in addition to various neuropathy questionnaires, laboratory data and self-reported outcomes with a focus of neuropathy. 

  • Biobank for future research: Yes, serum, plasma, buffy coat and urine. 

  • Possibility for linkage to other databases: Can be linked to Danish National registers and electronic patient records, short follow-up time. 

DIA-HEART study 


  • Design: Cross-sectional observational study. 

  • Year of completion: 2023. 

  • Participants: 901 people with type 2 diabetes without known cardiovascular disease recruited at treatment centers in Zealand, Denmark. 

  • Aim; Identify subpopulations at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease among asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes. 

  • Data types: Clinical examination, laboratory data, self-reported outcomes, cardiac 82Rb PET/CT (myocardial flow reserve, coronary artery calcium score, and more), echocardiography, 24-hour blood pressure, and lipidomics. 

  • Biobank for future research: Yes, plasma and serum, plus urine.  

  • Possibility for linkage to other databases: Can be linked to Danish National, short follow-up time. 

  • Reference: No publications yet, manuscript under preparation. 


EMPA-SEMA Study 


  • Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel, single-center study. 

  • Year of completion: 2023. 

  • Participants: 60 adult individuals with type 2 diabetes and albuminuria, recruited from Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, Denmark. 

  • Aim: To investigate whether combined treatment with empagliflozin and semaglutide can reduce urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) compared to treatment with empagliflozin alone in individuals with type 2 diabetes and albuminuria. 

  • Data types: Clinical data including measurements of UACR, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), 24-hour blood pressure, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), body weight, and plasma renin and aldosterone levels. 

  • Biobank for future research: Yes. 

  • Possibility for linkage to other databases: Can be linked to Danish National registers and electronic patient records, short follow-up time. 

 

PRO-B​NP 


  • Design: Cross-sectional observational study with prospective follow-up for cardiovascular events over 5 years. Annual visits were conducted to collect NT-proBNP, urine samples, EKG, plasma, and serum. 

  • Year of completion: 2012. 

  • Participants: 200 adult individuals with type 2 diabetes and micro- or macroalbuminuria, recruited from Steno Diabetes Center, without symptoms or prior diagnosis of heart disease. 

  • Aim: To investigate the prevalence of asymptomatic cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes and albuminuria, using NT-proBNP levels as a screening tool for undiagnosed cardiovascular disease. 

  • Data types: Clinical data including NT-proBNP levels, coronary calcium score, echocardiography, coronary angiography, SPECT scanning, MRI for brain vascular changes, and cardiovascular and kidney outcomes at approximately 5 years. 

  • Biobank for future research: Yes, including urine, plasma, and serum samples. 

  • Possibility for linkage to other databases: Can be linked to Danish National registers and electronic patient records. 

PROFIL Stu​dy 


  • Design: Cross-sectional study with a 5-year prospective follow-up. 

  • Year of completion: 2011. 

  • Participants: 676 patients with type 1 diabetes, divided into three groups: 304 with normoalbuminuria, 152 with microalbuminuria, and 179 with macroalbuminuria, along with 51 non-diabetic control participants. 

  • Aim: To investigate the 24-hour central and peripheral blood pressure profile in patients with type 1 diabetes and its relation to autonomic neuropathy and diabetic nephropathy.  

  • Data types: Clinical data include 24-hour blood pressure, ecg, pulse wave velocity, laboratory measures (e.g., HbA1c, lipid profile, renal function), and autonomic neuropathy assessments. 

  • Biobank for future research: Yes, including blood and urine samples. 

  • Possibility for linkage to other databases: Can be linked to Danish National registers and electronic patient records. 

StenoDOT/FibroDOT Study 


  • Design: Cross-sectional observational study. 

  • Year of completion: 2016 

  • Participants: 2,255 individuals with type 1 or type 2 diabetes recruited from Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, Denmark. 

  • Aim: To investigate the role of plasma vitamin D levels in the development and progression of acute and chronic complications in patients with diabetes, with a focus on bone, cardiovascular, and kidney disease.  

  • Data types: Clinical data from patient records, plus blood and urine samples. Key biomarkers include vitamin D, renal function, and cardiovascular risk markers. 

  • Biobank for future research: Yes, blood and urine samples. 

  • Possibility for linkage to other databases: Can be linked to Danish National registers and electronic patient records.
