Circadian rhythms are synchronized oscillations of physiological processes and biological clocks which are found in virtually all tissues. In modern society, the risk of becoming circadian misaligned (when the circadian rhythms are not synchronized to behavioural processes) has increased along with a parallel rise in the incidence of metabolic disorders.
It is well established that circadian misalignment promotes glucose intolerance. Type 2 diabetes is besides from being associated with circadian misalignment also related to cognitive dysfunction. In turn, circadian misalignment is associated with worse cognitive function.
Approaches to circadian rhythms e.g., time-restricted eating, are possible intervention methods targeting peripheral insulin resistance, yet the likely effect on central insulin resistance and cognition has barely been explored.
Aim
To investigate the effects of a 3-month time restricted eating-based intervention on changes in brain insulin sensitivity.
Design
Brain insulin sensitivity is evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging in combination with intranasal insulin using the change in cerebral blood flow to insulin as a measure for brain insulin sensitivity. Participants will be scanned before and after the 3-month intervention.
