Smoke-free school hours (SFSH) is a school tobacco policy which entails that students, staff and visitors are not allowed to smoke during school hours – nor inside or outside school area. The Smoke-Free Vocational Schools-intervention aims to facilitate SFSH implementation at nine VET schools, through a set of activities before, during and after SFSH is established at the respective schools. The activities target different ecological levels, e.g. student workshops- and study environment improvements, motivational interviewing courses for teachers and workshops for all organizational members to stimulate change readiness and counter implementation challenges.
The project is a collaboration between the Danish Cancer Society, the Danish Heart Foundation, Health Promotion Research at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC) and the participating schools. The intervention is developed in a joint venture between research and practice. The Danish Cancer Society and the Danish Heart Foundation are primarily responsible for executing the activities at the schools, whereas SDCC contributes with a formative evaluation and new research on effective tobacco control interventions. More specifically, SDCC investigates how and why implementation of SFSH is (or isn’t) happening through a process evaluation and the associated outcomes of the intervention related to smoking behavior and social norms through an outcome evaluation.
Smoke-free Vocational Schools is a research- and intervention project that aims to implement ‘smoke-free school hours’ (SFSH) in nine Danish vocational education and training (VET) schools and create new knowledge on effective tobacco control interventions. The primary research goal is to develop an evidence-based model on how to implement SFSH at VET schools and other comparable settings – a model, which contributes with new knowledge, as well as answering practice needs.
