Exploring the effects of time-restricted eating on body weight and associated cardiometabolic outcomes in South African women living with HIV (TESSA study)

Randomized controlled trial

Background and Aim

The preferred first-line antiretroviral treatment (ART) regimen in South Africa contains dolutegravir (DTG), which was introduced in the public health care system in 2019. DTG-based treatment increases body weight, but the metabolic sequelae of weight gain due to DTG are poorly understood. Because of the large burden of HIV, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and related micro- and macrovascular complications in South Africa, the healthcare system is challenged, and there is a risk that it will be further challenges as a consequence of the increased use of DTG-based treatment. The overall aim of the project is to investigate the effects of a time-restricted eating -based intervention on body weight and risk factors for T2D in men and women with overweight/obesity living with HIV who have initiated DTG-based ART.

Period: The study runs from 01.09.2021 to 31.03.2025
