Background and Aim
Food intake and food choice is highly driven by desire rather than the metabolic need. Studies have shown that people with obesity tend to have a higher preference for sugar- and fat-rich foods compared to individuals with normal weight, but the underlying mechanisms remains unclear.
Fibroblast Growth hormone 21 (FGF21) is a hormone stimulated by the intake of sugar, but not protein, and may influence food preferences by decreasing the preference for sugar and increase preference for protein. However, how the release of FGF21 affects food choice, and whether this differ between normal weight and overweight, has not yet been determined.
The aim of the MEMORY study is to investigate how the intake of specific macronutrients (sweet carbohydrates and protein) impacts the release of FGF21, and how this influences subsequent food preferences and food choice, and whether this differs between people with normal weight, overweight and obesity
Period: The study runs from december 2024 to april 2026
