Circadian rhythms are synchronized oscillations of physiological processes and biological clocks which are found in virtually all tissues. In modern society, the risk of becoming circadian misaligned (when the circadian rhythms are not synchronized to behavioural processes) has increased along with a parallel rise in the incidence of metabolic disorders.
Aim
To investigate and, if present, characterize, the hormonal chronobiological difference between individuals with type 2 diabetes and healthy matched controls. The study will examine circadian rhythms as a hormonal chronobiological condition (oscillations of melatonin and cortisol).
Design
As
part of the study, participants will stay at our facility over-night in a
blacked-out room. Blood will be drawn every third hour, and for certain
time-points every hour, and the different sleep stages evaluated. Participants
will be given standardized meals. In the morning, a cognitive questionnaire
will be performed.
