NEET is an acronym for “Not in Employment, Education or Training". The Danish
Forberende Grunduddannelse (FGU) is a flexible educational program that targets NEET youth (ages 16 to 25). The Danish NEET-schools were established in 2019 to prepare students for the conventional educational system or obtain employment. Little is known about the health promoting practice at Danish NEET schools.
The national survey will describe the practice (i.e., educational, policies, and other efforts) with regards to:
- Everyday physical activity
- Food and nutrition
- Psychological health
- Social relations
- Gender, body, and sexuality
- Smoking, nicotine products, alcohol, or drugs
- Sleep and tiredness
The survey is especially focused on the practice concerning everyday physical activity, as the survey is part of a larger physical activity promotion project[AVH1] . Also, the survey will describe the organization of work as well as conditions for the health promoting practice, e.g., collaborations with external stakeholders, resources, and use of data and evidence.
The survey is based on the “health promoting schools" concept. The approach is evidence-based and entails a whole-school approach to promoting health and educational attainment in school communities by capitalizing on the organizational potential of schools to foster physical, social-emotional, and psychological conditions for health.
The survey is qualified based on inputs from (1) a national advisory board which consists of practice/NEET school experts and (2) national and international research experts within the “health promoting school" field.
Aim
The national survey will investigate:
To what degree Danish NEET schools are “health promoting schools" – in general and specifically regarding physical activity promotion
The national survey will highlight how the Danish NEET schools are currently working with health promotion as well as identifying areas that might need improvement. These results enable targeted planning of future prevention and health promoting activities.
Knowledge from the survey will be applied with several aims:
The results will be communicated to relevant Danish stakeholders (e.g., NEET schools, municipalities). All NEET schools will receive an overview of their school-specific results in ultimo 2023. The national results will be launched in 2024.
The results will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Specifically, one article will encompass the survey validation study, whereas a second article will entail the empirical “health promoting school" results.
All Danish NEET schools will further receive the validated questionnaire, which enables further monitoring of the health promoting practices.
The results will be applied to develop and inform an intervention to promote physical activity among the students at Danish NEET schools.

The national survey is part of the
FGU23 – health and wellbeing, which includes a student survey and a survey to staff and managers. The student survey is conducted by the National Institute of Public Health.
The national survey that targets staff and managers is funded by the Danish Heart Foundation, as part of a larger intervention project.
