The effect on metabolism, food intake and preferences of an Inuit knockout gene variant involved in carbohydrate metabolism

​Background and aim

Sucrose intolerance is in general rare; however, it is a common condition in Greenland and other Inuit populations. Here, a genetic variant in the sucrase-isomaltase (SI) gene causes complete loss of enzyme function, hindering digestion of sucrose partly starch. The variant was recently associated with a metabolically healthier phenotype.

Including Greenlandic individuals with genetically inherited sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (cases) and controls, we are assessing differences between the two groups on:

1. Food- and taste preferences.

2. Habitual dietary intake of sucrose, starch and macronutrients.

Furthermore, we are assessing how cases and controls respond to a western diet high in carbohydrate and to a traditional diet high in protein and fat with respect to:
