Hedonic and homeostatic appetite control in obesity and type 2 diabetes in the context of meal and exercise timing – the TIMEX study

​A randomised crossover trial in people with overweight or obesity with and without type 2 diabetes​​​

​​​Background and Aim

Current evidence for the transient suppression of appetite following exercise termed “exercise-induced anorexia” remains inconclusive.  Another underexplored aspect is the time-of-day of exercise. Most exercise–appetite studies are conducted in the morning, often in the fasted state. However, daily fluctuations in hormonal rhythms and substrate metabolism suggest that the time of day could significantly influence appetite and energy balance responses to exercise. The overall aim of the present project is to investigate effects of acute exercise on ad libitum energy intake and study whether this differs between morning and evening in individuals with overweight/obesity with or without T2D. Furthermore, we aim to examine the role of hedonic and homeostatic drivers of appetite control in obesity and T2D in the context of meal and exercise timing
